Hi, i just got a WD black 1TB drive and i noticed that it was really noisy all the time even though i don´t got my OS on it. It´s getting me on the nerves please help

edit: i solved it, it wasn´t the harddrive, it was the cpu fan with a sliced cable. So if your harddrive makes a lot of noice, check where the sound is coming from!

Hey there, SabertoothFlux!

I'm very sorry to hear about annoyance with the WD Black. 🙁
I'd suggest to take a look at this link that will help you determine if the noise is normal or not: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=J7aMV1
I'd also recommend testing the drive and making sure everything with the health and SMART status is okay using Data LifeGuard Diagnostics: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=VBXu8A

Can you please also share if the noise is constant or only present when using specific programs/applications?

Keep me posted!

The sound is present all the time, the noise never stops, it sounds like it´s under heavy load all the time.

Not much to add except that it should NOT be very audible when you aren't reading/writing to it which is most of the time.

If it's bugging you there's likely something wrong.

If you want to see how much of a difference it makes (on vs off) then change the shutdown time in power management to 1 minute then sit and wait to see if it turning off makes a noticeable difference. Set it back to 15 or 20 minutes after.

If it's an issue you will need to RMA the drive. Before contacting WD tech support you should also run WD diagnostics:
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613&lang=en

(unzip, run setup, launch, chose WD HDD and run "QUICK TEST" first. If no problems run the "EXTENDED TEST" which will take a few hours)

Update:
Some drive noise can be made worse by how its mounted in the case. You can try REMOVING the drive then place on something that won't vibrate (like a soft surface with an anti-static bag on top). If you can't hear it then you may need to investigate ways to dampen noise. I had a noisy drive a few years ago and shoved thin cardboard between it and the case and that helped.

Did you check the suggested solutions in the first link I provided?
I'd recommend taking a look at this link: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php
Does the sound sound familiar to any of the ones listed there?
Can you please share the SMART status of the WD Black from the EXTENDED TEST with Data LifeGuard Diagnostics?
