Hi everyone,

I've recently built myself a new rig (specs below) and I'm experiencing an issue with the WD Black HDD I've installed.

When I first installed it, it was doing the quoted transfer speeds of over 100MB/s but suddenly dropped to maximums of about 4MB/s. After changing the SATA port and cable, it ran well for a little while, then dropped again. I updated my BIOS and same story; quick for a day or two then speeds slowed down to around 6MB/s.

Just for reference, all these varying speeds were achieved by transferring the same files.

I've had a look through the forums but couldn't find a question exactly like mine so I'm hoping some of the community can give me tips on what to do next. Thanks!

Specs:
Windows 10
Intel i5 6600K
Asus Z170-AR Mobo
16GB Corsair Vengence 3000Mhz (2x8GB)
MSI GTX 1080 Gaming
2x Samsung 850 500GB SSD
WD Black 2TB HDD

Hi there Armaguard,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. 🙁

My suggestion would be to start with backing up the most important data stored on the drive. This is a secondary drive right?

After that, as you've experience some transfer speed improvement, you can attach the drive to another port with different cables once again and see if that would help.

If the issue persists, you can run both short and extended DLG tests on the drive: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=bVL1dD

Is the drive under warranty?

Let me know how this goes,
