Hello Everyone,

First Time posting here.

I´ve run into some major issue with one of my WD HDD. Recently one of my drives stopped working, and as Murphy´s law dictates, is the one with all my work related information.

I´m a 3d artist and that disk had all my most recent project in it, including a large part of my 3d model library, and as usual no backup.

Here is the thing, I´ve been having some issues with my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC), the ordinary 4 Dimm Ram issue (well known issue among GA users, which I won´t be for much longer) and a PCI port that works when it wants.
Recently I was installing some case fans and a water cooler for my CPU as the heat this summer will prove to be a real challenge for my PC. I installed my fans and everything and when I put the PC together again the WD drive was not being recognized by the BIOS.

Now I think is too much of a coincidence for the disk to suddenly stop working like that, as it has been working 100% fine for the past year and a half since I got it, and it has not received any physical or electrical harm.
I tested it out with different SATA cables, different ports, but I was still hopping to be a failure of my crappy motherboard and not a failure of my disk.

I recently tested the drive in my second computer and no luck, it doesn´t even make a sound, vibration, nothing is as if it was completely unppluged.

I tried to use the WD Lifeguard diagnostic tool but it crashes everytime I try to run the app.

I´m writting but I fear the obvious answer, but I need to express this with 3 purpuses.

1. If there´s anything else I can do to make sure the disk works or is there a way I can salvage my info?

2. Anyone can help me decypher why this hellish thing could happen to a drive all the sudden like that?

3. ask WHYYY WD?? WHYY????? :fou:

Thanks!

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, JMatos!

I'm very sorry to hear about your projects and the issues with the WD Black drive. :( Unfortunately, if you cannot get the drive to spin up at all, I'm not sure how you will be able to proceed with the troubleshooting.
Since the data on it is so important to you, I guess your best bet at retrieving it is contacting a professional data recovery company. I'd suggest you to take a look at WD's Data Recovery Partners worldwide here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=eL76YZ

Hopefully they will be able to recover your projects without any damages on them. Sadly, hardware failures happen unexpectedly sometimes :( which is why it's very important to always have backups of your data on several...

You can open Disk management to check if the drive shows up in there

But since you've tried to plug it into another computer without success, your best bet is that it has "failed"

There is still hope for you though. Try using a program called Easeus data recovery wizard and you may have a chance of recovering data from that drive

Once you've tried the data recovery procedures, I'd recommend you to get in touch with our tech support and send your RMA request in order to be able to receive a replacement drive.
Here's a link that explains the whole RMA process: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=KtULz3

Hope I was helpful! Best of luck!

Thanks Guys!

I´ll find someway to recover the data.
I will definetly send my RMA request once I try to save what I can.

I´m looking to replace the drive as of now. Any recommendation on drives?

Most likely will experience with another brand as this is my second WD drive that fails on me in 3 years, I really liked the product as nost of my drives are WD but, I´m starting to wonder about that.

Which of their drives would WD recommend for just data storage and backup?
and which would WD recommend for architecture apps like REVIT and ACAD, and other apps like 3dsMax and photoshop.

I´m thinking to replace it with 2 drives and do some research on RAID configuration to see how does that work when configuring it to have one disk mirroring the other, that way I´ll always have backup.

thanks,

This should help you decide

WD green is for backup/mass storage
WD black is for performance and gaming
WD blue is for basic tasks and standard users
WD red is for network attached storage

The worst brand out there is Seagate with the highest failure rate.
The best is WD

Hi again, JMatos!

I'm truly sorry about your bad experience with the failed WD Black. I hope that you've sent your RMA request already and get a working replacement product soon! :/

A good data storage WD alternative is the WD Green HDD. It's main purpose is to be used as secondary storage for your massive files or a backup drive (put in an external enclosure). It uses IntelliPower and offers storage capacity variations from 500 GB up to 6 TB. You can read more about its features here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=O8rFRv

As for your demanding software applications, I'd recommend you to take a look at WD VelociRaptor. The HDD offers 10 000 RPM with 64 MB cache and it also comes with a 5-year limited warranty like the WD Black. The VelociRaptor is optimized especially for high-performance computing, 3D rendering, digital content creation and editing, scientific computing and image management. You can see more details about its specs & technologies here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=0HYa64

Keep me posted if you've got any questions! :)
