Hello

Is it normal that a BRAND NEW WD Black 64mb 1T WD1002FAEX gives out a cranky sound like it is an old hard disk?

Done That!
1) WD's diagnostic utility >> PASS
2) fragmentation >> Nope, it is not fragmented

If so how can I reduce the sound of the hard disk?

I don't have the EAX version of the drive, but I do have the WD Black WD1000FALS and I don't thinks it's very loud. Have you used any tools to check the SMART values on the drive? You can download WD's diagnostic utility to make sure it's ok too. If the drive checks out ok, you can download tools to turn on AAM (Automatic Acoustic Management). Of course, there is a trade off between noise level and performance. The quieter the drive, the less performance you get.

sound when reading or writing, can mean fragmentation of the drive. If you're using NTFS windows have some defragmentation tools to do the job. Hope it helps. If fragmentation is not the problem, then it may be a heat issue, it which case your harddrive needs cooling(if it doesn't already have a fan blowing over it, get that asap) 1TB drives is very dense, and needs active cooling compared to older 200gb drives
