Question wd black nvme gen4

i just bought a wd black nvme gen 4 SN770 for my gaming laptop that supports gen 4, and im pretty sue that my nvme isnt downloading at full speed and id like to know how to activate it. i have a lenovo ideapad 3 15arh7 if you need to know. the peak install peak in steam was 851 mbps.

Your drive has little or nothing to do with the "speed" at which you get a download from Steam.

This has more to do with your internet connection.

Assuming your laptop supports gen4 NVME, just run CrystalDiskMark64 sequential test on it...; if much above 3500 MB/sec, you are running Gen4.
