WD Caviar Black????

That is the drive you want. DO NOT buy any other color if you are looking for quality.

1 problem. according to a western digital forum moderator, WD ships lower quality drives to newegg (often branded as OEM) and does not necessarily come with the same warranty.

Newegg drives are not lower quality (chuckle) and come with the same warranty 5 YEARS (blacks). Sometimes you just gotta laugh at some of the things you hear on this forum lol.

I've always used oem blacks, always from Newegg, never had a failure.

OEM means original equipment manufacturer, it basically means it doesn't come in a box or with software or with screws. You can get the software on the website if you need it.

All hd manufacturers lowered their warranties this year, but the blacks are still 5 years.

My posting was poorly written.

Where I am comming from is; a Moderator on the Western Digital support forum has made a comment on a posting in regaurds to a drive that fails to detect,

"I'm a moderator, so I don't usually weigh in on threads unless I have to. In this case, you rung my bell. We do make specific oem drives for various manufacturers. Sometimes, there's extra drives left over that get sold to resellers like NewEgg. If that's the case, then they won't necessarily match exactly our line as displayed on the website, but they could be our drives. Always make sure who's honoring the warranty, though. We don't usually warranty oem drives. You can check a serial number on our website to make sure we honor it. If it shows up with a warranty period, then we will honor the warranty."

later on it was elaborated that some 1 TB drives are failed 1.5's

newegg is not a bad retailer, I purchase from them often, I have had failed drives, and they replaced them quickly without issue, and that is not their fault. stuff happens and sometimes new equipment is DOA.

A good example of why WD would do this would be AMD's X3 CPU.

Some OEM drives, eg those sold to Apple, may have special firmware which is tailor-made for the OEM. For example, some Apple drives will have a redefined jumper pin that provides a temperature output for an external hardware temperature sensor.

Dell and HP are other well known OEMs. OEM-ing allows WD to shift the burden of support to the OEM.

I see no where in that post where the guy says they ship Newegg lower quality drives, as you said. That's BS.

Either that guy is smoking crack or he's not a moderator.

I personally have RMA'd hundreds and hundreds of hd's to Western Digital for RMA and we only stocked OEM, not a single one of them was a retail box. Never had any problem with them honoring any warranty.

What he is saying it is possible. But, it could be possible for pretty much any seller like Newegg too.

So you never had a failure from WD OEM Black drives, yet you have RMA'd "hundreds and hundreds" of them? I see the logic here.

I have two Western Digital Black 2TB WD2002FAEX, and i plan to buy more. It is the most popular performance mechanical HDD on the market.

It's extremely fast, extremely good quality at a good price. You could even say that it looks rather sexy too. 😍

I couldn't tell you exactly the windows boot times, because i use SSD's for that, but the Black won't disappoint in that regard either.

All the best.

if you want to take it up another notch, get the RE4. i've got the 500GB RE4 and i get 130MB/s speeds. i used to boot windows in under 10 seconds. keep in mind i only used 70 gigs of that drive before i got my 128GB 830 SSD. there shouldn't be any noticable differences, but if you are going for the VERY best, RE4.

NONE of those statements say anything about them being lower quality drives....I think YOU need to read it again.

Making drives for Dell and having some left over and selling them to Newegg makes them lower quality drives??? LOL

Failed 1.5TB drives where they removed the failed platter and sold it as a 1TB drive makes it a lower quality drive??? Double LOL

Do you think Intel doesn't sell failed 6 core cpu's as 4 core cpus? Do you think they are lower quality?? Do you think AMD doesn't sell failed 4 core cpu's as dual core cpus? Do you think they are lower quality??

I said I've never had a black drive fail. And when I worked the RMA departement and RMA'd hundreds of drives, there was no such thing as blacks at that time and we sold hundreds a day, so yeah it's perfectly logical to RMA 10 a month, although that's "illogical" to you, and after 4 years that works out to HUNDREDS. That's a lot less than the Maxtor, Samsung, and Fujitsu drives I had to RMA.

You should work on your reading comprehension skills, they are seriously lacking. :pt1cable:
