Hello Everyone,

I have a 500GB WD Elements external hard drive. It fell down to the floor but not too hardy. Now it is working and showing all data but responding very slowly. It is taking very long to open files on it and even longer to send files from it. Data read speed is just 30-40 KB/second. It is spinning without any any noise and not externally broken. It comes under in warranty.

Well I an a graphic designer I have many projects on it. So I want to recover my data as it is full near to 400 GB. So please suggest me how can I get back my data.

Thanks in advance for any help received.

Getting a third party to do anything is too expensive and I do not recommend it.

Get a 1 TB external drive and use that exclusively for backups.

You stated that the drive that was dropped does work, but slow. Connect it to the computer and transfer the files even though the transfer is slow.

If the files are corrupted then use 'RECUVA' - https://www.piriform.com/recuva

Here are some tools to recover data:

1. Download and run ‘RECUVA’ (free) - http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download

2. 17 free tools here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file...

Good luck!

Thanks Ubrales!!

I want to go for a backup. Transferring the data at 30-40 KB/second is just annoying and frustrating. Please suggest me how to get a backup. Should I use third-party data recovery software? Will that backup my data quickly & easily than transferring? How much time it will take, any idea?

As many other people I prefer external hard drive to other devices because it's quite speedy. It takes seconds to copy necessary files. But the longer you use your hard drive the slower it can become. When I noticed that my hard drive is not so quick as it was before I tried to find out the reasons and the following article was very helpful https://hetmanrecovery.com/recovery_news/six-reasons-why-your-external-drive-may-get-slow.htm
