Please help!!

After a very long time I have finally ditched my old laptop which was running on XP, and got myself a new desktop with windows 8.
I was using a Western Digital external HDD via USB on my laptop, where I stored all the usual -music photos etc.

I plugged it into my new desktop and I cannot access the files.
When I go to Computer, it lists the available drives, but my WD is not listed.
Although, when I go to control panel, hardware and printers, it is listed as a connected device and is displaying "device is working properly" when I look in properties.

Any advice?

Mines does not show in My computer, computer management, Smartware, or control panel. I just submitted for an advance RMA to replace the drive. It would be great to see a solution for this and be able to retrieve my files before sending back the "defective" drive. Mine is WD usb 2.0. A friend just bought a seagate 3.0 and it not only recognized, but transferred 95 GB of videos at over 80 MB/s

Yes. If you still encounter the issue of Windows 8 not recognizing WD portable HD. You should double-check your laptop/desktop USB ports type and any portable hard disk USB connection type; the USB 3.0 protocol device won't work on the USB 2.0 laptop ports. Windows 8 will check for hand-shake and assign the driver to the plug-in devices; in this case, the driver is disk.sys. The USB 3.0 cable has the SS logo.

So there's no backwards compatibility for external HDD USB3 in Windows 8? We must use the USB3 Ports?
How sad.
