Depends. Is this a 2.5" or 3.5" drive?

2.5" is usually somewhere in the range of 0.4A to 0.75A, depending on spin speed and other factors.

An external mechanical drive might require a power adapter to run. External SSDs can get enough power from just the USB port.

Hi there wazim,

It really depends on the model. The portable drives(Passport series let's say) do not need any power adapters as the USB cable will be enough to power them up.
The desktop models require power adapter(1.5 to 3.0 Amps).
