Hi all,

I just got a Synology DS-213j without hard drives. Now I have to buy the hard disks and I was thinking to get the WD green 3TB, but I saw that they are not listed on the compatibility list from Synology. Only HD from the Red series are listed and they are sensibly more expensive than the green line.
I know that the WD Red are designed specifically to run 24/7, but I want to use my NAS mainly as backup, sometimes as home cloud to stream movies and to have access to my files when I am not at home, using the Wake on Lan function. So I think I am not going to use it 24/7 actually.

There is some other counterindication about the use of the WD Green Hard drives? Are they much worse/unreliable than the WD Red?

Thanks for your help!

Guido

The Green drives are not very good for RAID, and them not being on the Synology list while the Reds are should be a strong hint -- don't go Green.

They park their heads too often and will eventually show up as a failed drive in the array because of their power saving activity.

So, the WD Green could be a choice only in the case of not using RAID (which I am still considering). Otherwise do you have a suggestion between the Seagate, Hitachi or WD?
Here the list of compatibility from Synology

Thanks again!

I use Seagate, Hitachi and WD Red drives and all work well. Since the Green drives are not on the compatibility list you should expect to run into problems, as many users of them have in similar circumstances. I have a number of Green drives used for internal storage in various computers, but a direct SATA connection is very different than using a Synology box.

Do not get the green drives! They are a bad choice for NAS and that is why they are not on the list.

I have the 1 TB Seagate ST1000DM003 which is on the list and I have been very pleased with it. Very fast performance with 64 MB cache and at a low price. Highly recommended!

OK, then I'll keep the WD Green for other uses.
I was thinking to take a 3TB and in a couple of months to double with another one. Then there is no real difference between the Hitachi, Seagate and WD Red listed on the Synology webpage? Can I make the choice only looking at the cost?
Apart the very expensive solutions, I have to choose between the Western Digital Red SATA III 3TB (WD30EFRX) for 109 euro and the Seagate Barracuda SATA III 3TB (ST3000DM001), which costs 10 euro less.
The Seagate should be faster, since has 7200 rpm, but I don't know if this is needed, since the NAS runs over a network.
Are the WD Red more reliable with the 5400 rpm?

I am waiting only for these last advices before ordering and having the NAS to set up in the weekend!
Thanks!!

I have Two 2tb green drives in my home server. They are not raided and have worked fine for several years.
Then again I also have two 3tb seagates, two 2tb Samsung F4, and two 2Tb hitachi's which all have also worked fine. The F4's being the oldest.

When they say its not intended for 24/7 they mean being used 24/7. For your personal Nas I doubt someone would be accessing files around the clock (unless you torrent overnite or something).
if you can live without the raid they seem to be fine and for many people they work fine in raid as well.
