Hey all, i'll soon to be building up my Poweredge 2950 server with a 300GB SAS and 2TB WD Green SATA, both that i previously have had. Since the server has a PERC 6i in it, I was going to assign RAID 0 individually to each drive, just so the controller can see it, as i believe it cannot see JBOD.

The main question i have is will the Green drive have issues in a RAID, even though it's more of a formatting thing than anything, and won't really be used in a real RAID?

On a side note, can i change a RAID 0 to RAID 1 without formatting into the future, because i was told that would be easy?

I know my intentions for the server might be a bit vague, but i'm in a rush and wanted to get the question out there and i'll add clarification later. Thanks

you may have trouble with the power saving features of a green drive. they can take longer to wake than drives, i think its the head parking that causes it.

converting a 2 disk RAID0 to a 2 disk RAID1 is easy, you would rebuild the array, but you will loose the data. however, migrating from a 2 disk RAID0 to a 4 disk RAID10 is as easy as creating the new RAID0 and RAID1 matrix levels
