Question Wd hd camera system problem

I have a wd hd 6 camera system that runs on cat 5e lines. The main box is freaking out and won't let me login, freezes any time I try to pull up history. Only thing I can use it for is live view. I want to replace the main box but keep using the camera's. Can I just pick any camera nvr box that uses cat 5/6 lines to run camera's or will there be more info needed for the camera's to work with another NVr box?

It would be according mostly to whether the connector is proprietary and whether or not you can go in and either see or edit the camera 'addresses' for a standard machine to know where they are (so to speak). It very well could be that the cameras and DVR for the WD system used proprietary software and hardware for their branded system.

For price to performance on cameras, I like HIK Vision.

Cable is standard cat 5e cable. System runs on camera over ip. I just don't know what that really means.
