The HDD in question is: WD Caviar Blue 640GB SATA/16Mb cache WD64000AAKS.

My 4-yr Gateway computer primary HD (OS/Bootable) is pretty much dead.
Usually used by my son, I had lot of information on that 🙁. Last few days, it was not booting easily (Had to restart few times). And now it stopped totally.
HD was not accessible though the BIOS too.
I took the HD out and connected externally with USB/SATA cable. The cable has no issue as I tested with other HD.
What I am observing is,
The HD powers up, starts spinning and USB connection lights/make beep sound on laptop.
But HD is not recognizable by Laptop, either thru Explorer, Bios or even with other tools (WD diag as well as tried few sahreware).
HD stops spinning after 30sec to 1 min.
🙁
I read few issues related to Seagate but not WD. Any hope.... Looking towards gurus here to save and able to pull data.
Opening HD and check head... or change the PCB...

I know that this is too late to say it, but EVERYONE should have some sort of backup in place. Something as simple as this $66.00 external hard drive will work:

http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Ultra-Portable-External-Backup/dp/B00E83X9P8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395253582&sr=8-1&keywords=wd+1tb+external+hard+drive

It even doubles as a personal mobile cloud.

As for a solution to your problem, if you cannot retrieve your data and it really is that important to you, you can use a data recovery company such as this one. It isn't going to be all that inexpensive, but if the data is that important then I'm sure it's worth the cost.

No matter the outcome, I do hope you consider a backup plan. If not the one I suggested, another storage device that is capable of doing the job. Please do let me know what the final outcome is. I would like to know an effective way of retrieving the data myself.

Agree.. I back up every month or few month.. I didnt know that LR started putting all files on this drive by default...
But what now...

Does it look like PCB issue or head stuck, which needs opening of the drive casing...

I don't really like the idea of opening up the drive casing unless you're very familiar with what you're doing. I, personally, won't do it. But then again I am always backed up and hope to never be in that spot. LOL My suggestion would be what I said up above.....If you can't get it working without getting into things that you don't fully understand, let a professional do it. As I mentioned, it may not be the least expensive thing in the world, but if the data is that important to you, you have to ask yourself can you afford NOT to pay it and rist damaging the drive to the extent that even THEY can't fix it.
