My WD My Book Essential 2TB works OK but is not recognized after I shut down. Most of the time I am able to get it going again by removing the USB cable, powering the WD off and on, and reconnecting the USB cable, sometimes after many tries. The WD then continues to perform as intended until I again turn off my computer. My Windows 7 is up to date. WD has not responded with any useful suggestions.

Solution
Hey Ottaron. Have you tried the drive with a different USB cable (not longer than 12")? I'd also suggest that you try it with a different computer, to see if the issue persists. Another thing which you can do, if the suggested above doesn't resolve the problem is - to uninstall the drive from Device Manager, restart the computer, connect the drive and let Windows install the drivers again.
If you have any suspicion that there might be something wrong with the drive itself, I'd recommend that you backup your important data and then download DLG (Data Lifeguard Diagnostic) from here: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows, to test the drive and see if there's anything out of the ordinary.

Hope that helps.
