Hi,
Few days back I bought a wd my passport 5tb ext hdd.

I am noticing a single click/cling sound at windows shutdown.
I have not noticed this kind of sound from my other 1tb ext hdds. They sound like soft creaking noise.

The hdd works fine. Crystal disk mark shows ok.

Is this head parking sound? Will it make problem in long run (after 3-4yrs)?

Is it because this 5tb hdd has 5 platters/10heads/bigger head assembly?

I think what the drive is resting on is amplifying the sound.
Well, it is resting like (Top to bottom):

The 5tb hdd
thin rubber band
1tb 2.5 hdd full aluminum case
soft felt spacer
1tb 2.5 hdd full aluminum case
Foam pad/sponge sheet
Table top

Anyway the phone camera has boosted the sound. In reality the sound is lower than the video.

External drives start and stop way too much IMHO. I haven't used one for a while. After the last WD My book I have no desire to..Drive died and I lost a bunch of my recorded songs essentially. I did assume they are much better today controller-wise.

All mechanical things can fail. And SSDs fail too. That's why backups -- preferably multiple ones -- are a basic part of responsible PC ownership.
