Hi,

When I connect the USB disk my PC becomes really slow and unresponsive even a trivial operation such as taking a screenshot took me like 1 minute!

The device shows up as a Western Digital device but with a different drive and no drive label. In My Computer I can see the drive but I cannot open it. Even Disk Management freezes when the disk is connected but as soon as I unplug it everything goes back to normal! Even GParted (Live USB) gets stuck at Searching /dev/sdc forever!

Hi raihan Iqbal,
sorry to hear your HDD problems,
it sounds like faulty HDD.. Did you give a try with any other pc still problem persists?...
Then if there is data and want to recover it go here..http://support.wdc.com/recovery/index.asp?selregion=americas
or if it is under warranty RMA it!!!!!!!http://support.wdc.com/warranty/

Welcome to the community, Raihan Iqbal!

I'm sorry to hear about your WD My Passport external drive. 🙁 I'd suggest you to first try to test the drive using WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool and check up on the health and SMART status of the HDD. Make sure you run the QUICK and the EXTENDED test from the utility. Here's link to it: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=TPzMUY
I'd also try to connect the external using a different USB cable and see if that will improve things.
If nothing helps, better contact our tech support and send out your RMA request if it's still covered by the warranty. You should be able to get a replacement.

Hope this helps you! Keep us posted though!

After the ran the tool, it was stuck at the "Loading Devices" screen for 5-10 minutes and then when I saw the SMART status I was totally shattered and lost all hope. But then I thought I should give the Quick Test a try. When the test was at 50%, something really miraculous happened! A new File Explorer window opened and there it was!!

I can access all my files but there's still some lag when I double click on a folder. Windows says I should scan the drive.

How can I bring it back to 100%?

Good job, Raihan! I'm glad you've managed to get your hands on your files again. Yet I'm afraid you should consider yourself lucky and back up the data from the drive ASAP, though!
You still might be dealing with a faulty external WD My Passport, so the best thing to do is to back up your files somewhere else and try to run the extended test again.
If it's still failing, I'd suggest you to read through this link about how to RMA and replace your WD HDD: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ZKog71

Keep me posted though! :)

But after running for almost 5 hours I got this

Hi again, Raihan Iqbal!

Unfortunately, I'm afraid I cannot see your screenshots in the last post. Can you please try to upload them again or use Imgur to do so?
Either way, I strongly recommend you to contact our tech support and I'd still suggest you to send your RMA request. Even if you get the WD Passport to work again, nobody can say how long it will last especially if we are dealing with a physical damage.
