WD My Passport Ultra detected on USB 2.0 but not USB 3.0

As the title says, I can't get it to work on my PC (z170 pro gaming mobo) on usb 3.0 ports. All other devices work fine on 3.0 . The disk only gets detected on usb 2.0 ports, I've also tried the disk on an usb 3.0 card, no luck. I've tried disabling/uninstalling and unplugging the hdd from device manager and then plugging it in the 3.0 ports first in both windows and bios. All the usb drivers are up to date.

If I attempt to use the hdd on my surface pro 2 (1 usb 3.0 port) it works perfectly

Ideas would be much appreciated!

Have you updated your MOBO's drivers? If you haven't, you can go to the MOBO's website and update the USB 3.0 drivers.
Have you tried other external drives on these USB 3.0 ports? Is the drive even powering up? In case you have some USB 3.0 ports on the back of the case, you can attach the drive to those.

What is your OS? In case you are on Win 10, you can check this update out: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3193494

The mobo drivers are updated, I don't have any other external drives to test, as for the ports, I've tried all the 4 3.0 mobo ports on the motherboard and the two 3.0 ports on the card, none work. I've tried crystaldiskmark and read/write speeds are around 40 mb/s on the 2.0 ports, I'll try it on the surface pro 2, if it's similar I'm guessing the cable is at fault.

Well yeah. I've come across similar cases, where the cable was the cause for the issue.
If you are getting better results on the surface pro though, it could be OS/drivers related.

No luck, the speed on the old cable on the tablet was the same 40 mb/s, and still is 40 mb/s on a different cable, running out of ideas here :/

What speed do you get when you try to transfer a single, big file?

I believe it may be a good idea to test the drive with WD's DLG tool. You can run both short and extended tests: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=idXtF3

Got 40-45mb/s moving a 30gb zip file. The short one passed, i'll leave the extended one overnight thanks
