WD My Passport Ultra

I bought a new WD My Passport Ultra HDD online and will receive by 2 days. I wanted to know how much transfer speed I will get in my USB 2.0 port and I also wanted to know whether can formatting damage HDDs and also tips to max out its performance and take care of it.
My specs are:
Intel Core i5 M480
4 GB RAM
ATI Graphics
Dell Inspiron N5010 Laptop
500 GB HDD

2. Formatting wont damage HDD.

3. Don't drop it, bump it, remove properly from PC, and try to keep it cool.
