wd my passport ultra

My passport ultra has stopped appearing on m windows 8.1. For no reason. When I plug it in the light comes on but nothing. it doesn't even appear in disk management.

it has a lot of stuff on it that I need. So how do I rectify it?

Oh dear, you shouldn't rely on a single hard drive to store important data on, especially an external one as they are less reliable than an internal one. Two drives is the minimum for data storage in case of drive failure.

If your PC refuses to see the drive even in Disk Management there is very little you can do, I think it has failed.
Same thing happened to me with my one and only external drive when I was too "green" to know any better.
Since then I always use three of them, same data on each. When one fails I replace it as soon as I can.

Unfortunately, I would agree with Phillip Corcoran and say that there is little you can do.
I would advise you to start with just changing the USB cable as well as the USB port you are connecting it to. Trying it on another system will not hurt as well.
Though, if the issue persists, you will have to contact a data recovery company in order to retrieve your data.
