Hello there

I got an 3TB Mybook 1140 from WD.
I used it on my trips in the NAVY. Many days i plugged in and unplugged it.
Now back home it started up nice but sometimes the drive dissapeared.
A few days later it didnt turn on at all.
It does show up in device management but cant allocate a Drive.
Also reinstalled the drivers, doesnt work either.

I unpacked the case and fitted the HDD in the pc and did not work either.

What can i do to fix it?
I do not have money atm for a new EHDD (Bought a house) so i cant recover data on a new HDD either.

Is this EHDD still fixable?

Btw, i also got an 750GB WD and a 200GB WD (both little older) who has the same issue.
The 750GB still works though but it keeps on closing so i am not using it atm.

Thanks in advance!

Mitchell (from the netherlands)

Hey, Mitchell!

I'm very sorry to hear about the problems you have with your WD drives. 🙁
Unfortunately, you shouldn't have taken the HDD out of the case. This doesn't only void the warranty, but also makes the data on the drive unaccessible due to the hardware encryption that it incorporates. You need to put it back in the case or use the same model case to try to access your data.
As for your other WD HDDs, I'd strongly recommend to test them using Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool:
http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=9glf5Y
This will determine the health and SMART status on the drives and let you know if you have anything to worry about.
The HDD that keeps on closing, I'd suggest to try that one with a different SATA cable and see if the closing will stop.

Hope this was helpful! Keep me posted!

Thanks you SuperSoph.
Well for the warranty.
I was on the ocean for 4 months (I am in the Navy) and i have it filled with games and movies.
The only thing that kills my time is that and fitness.
So i wanted to fix it Asap.
I thought it was the cable that might have snapped because it was strangled. But it wasnt that case.

I am going to try the Data lifeguard diagnostics tool.
Am i still able to retrieve data?

The drive is an 1140 wich isnt encrypted.
But i encrypted with the windows cryption tool

Greetings.

Hi again, Damitch300!

No, Data LifeGuard won't be able to retrieve your data, it's just going to test your drive for damage and failures. It will let you know what's the HDD's health and SMART status.
If your data is very important to you, I'd strongly recommend you to get in touch with a professional data recovery company because they are your best chance at getting most or all of your data back:
http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=d12Yqp
However, they are costly so you might want to try with some third-party software utilities. Check this thread:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/291895-32-best-data-recovery-software

Well, as long as it's a software encryption you should be able to retrieve your files somehow. The hardware encryption on the other hand, makes the data unaccessible without the drive's original enclosure.

Keep me posted with your troubleshooting progress.

Hello SuperSoph_WD

Sorry for the long time between last time and now. I was gone again for a long time.

I did you diagnostics test on the disc. It passed all tests.
It says pass and it works fine as diagnostics programs concern.
However Windows still doenst see it and neither i can make it possible through device manager.

I have the 750gb and 200gb run through diagnostics and the 200gb is dead but the 750 is not able to be seen by the program. The disk still runs and closed from time to time in windows.
It is an odd thing that 3 of my WD disks has issues. I want to cry literally.

Any chance you know what to do with my 3 terabyte? The 200gb and 750gb are old anyway and are empty of data.
But the 3TB is still very much needed.

Greetings! And thanks for your help.

Hi again, Mitchell!

I'm truly sorry about your unfortunate experience with the WD drives! 🙁 I guess what you can do is check the warranty: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=aRWMjN
If it's still covered, you should get in touch with our customer support and let them know about this. You should be able to send an RMA and be provided with a replacement.
Here are their contacts: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=mxI3Hm
KB article that explains how to RMA your WD My Book: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=IsGOk4

If the files on the drive are so important, I'd advise you to use the services of a professional Data Recovery company. Here's the link to our partners again: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=8oKWUi

In the future, I strongly recommend keeping several copies of your data on-site and off-site. This way you'd be able to avoid the headaches of data loss. I guess we've all been there and learned the hard way, though.

Good luck! Hope I was able to help! :)
