my WD Passport Ultra - 1T suddenly not recognized or detected by my PC. I already tried to open it with 4 computers but nothing happened. I also change the USB CABLE to make sure it was not the problem. all computer said that it can only be read with a 3.0 USB port. when you try to troubleshoot the device it will just take time to install a driver but still the computer cannot read the device. It was working fine for almost 9 mos. then it suddenly stops. Also, when my friend tried it in his computer he heard some sound like it is reading or something.

All of my important data was saved there.

can you please help me on how to solve this problem?
or if this is still on warranty?

Solution
Hey there, myszelle29.

I'm really sorry to hear about the issues you're having with your drive. It's unfortunate that you've tried all of the troubleshooting basics, but you didn't get any positive results. 🙁
I'd suggest that you try to get to your files with data recovery software: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html and http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm. Another option would be to try and access the drive via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if that OS can recognize it and let you retrieve your files. However, the most reliable option of all would be a professional solution, such as a data recovery company: WD Data Recovery Partners.
As for the warranty...

As for the warranty, you could check it out here: Check your Warranty Status.

I really hope that you'll able to recover your data. Fingers crossed! Please let me know how everything goes.

Hi Boogieman_WD,

I tried to bring it to the store if it is still in warranty, they said that it is possible to be fixed but they cannot assure if my data will be recovered. do you think it can be still recovered even if it not recognized by the computer ?

it is the first time that i encounter this problem so, please help me. 🙁

It's a really unfortunate situation, I know, I've been there myself. 🙁
If you don't have any luck with the suggestions from my previous post, it sounds like the most viable option for data recovery would be professional help.
As for the warranty I don't know what's covered by the reseller, but you could use the link from my previous post to check the warranty with WD and see if it still has one. If it does, get in touch with our customer support to ask about RMA, but that is something which should be done after you've sorted out the data recovery problem.

Please keep me posted on your progress.

Well I'm talking about data recovery companies that provide that kind of services. The have the so called "clean rooms" and are even able to extract data from from the platter of HDDs that don't even power up. I guess that in your case it would be easier, but I can't speak for them so you'd have to get in touch with such a company and consult with them.

You could still keep trying data recovery programs, but if none of them can detect the drive, I guess that this option is not a viable one.

Well, there's a suggestion in my first post - here it is again so that you don't have to go scrolling and looking for it: WD Data Recovery Partners.

Unfortunately, there are countries, which are not featured in that list and if this is the case, you'd have to find a local data recovery company, which offers that kind of services. Note that you're not obliged to choose any of the listed suggestions and can go for a different one if you have other recommendations. It's totally up to you.

I really hope that you'll get your data back, so please let me know what happens. Fingers crossed!
