I just purchased a SSD and a WD1002FAEX 1TB internal hard drive. SSD is for my OS and 1TB is for storage.

SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211582&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

Installing Win7 on the SSD went fine, boots up really fast and all that good stuff. Went in to disk management to format my 1TB, started formatting it, and it failed. Tried again, and this time it was successful. So, I went through the process of updating my computer and then restarted and when it came back on the 1TB wasn't registering.

I went in and changed the rig to run in AHCI (did the whole regedit set to 0 deal, too) and the "starting windows" screen increased to like 5 minutes. Still, Windows couldn't detect the 1TB.

The strangest thing is that in the boot menu, I can select the 1TB (though it says it's a WD1001FAEX, instead of 1002) to boot from (there's nothing on it), but in the BIOS options and hard drive list, it just shows up as "0.0G".

I switched back from AHCI to IDE for the sake of startup speed. Everything is running great, other than the undetectable hard drive.

My specs are:
GPU: EVGA 04G-P4-2766-KR GeForce GTX 760 4GB
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600 Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz
MOBO: MSI P67A-G45 (B3)
PSU: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB

Some parts are older than others... I have done some recent upgrading.

Oh, definitely. That sounds like a bad/damaged drive. NewEgg drives can get damaged in transit if they aren't packed well. I would return it and get a replacement or a different brand. They're all equally annoying. I hate hard drives with a...

Have you tried the HDD in other SATA ports?

Also, as a side note, you might want to just put the drives in AHCI mode and reinstall Windows -- a pain in the butt, I know, but it'll give you better performance and save you some headaches since you had issues when trying to make the registry mods.

Yes, I have tried several different ports. Unplugging the hard drive also doesn't speed up the startup process. I'm reinstalling Windows on the SSD in AHCI mode, will post back with results.

Side note: starting the computer up in AHCI mode, windows installer still didn't acknowledge the HDD in question. It recognized the external I have plugged in, though. I'm thinking maybe I got a POS HDD and should return it. But I want to be sure before I bother Newegg with a replacement request.

UPDATE: I have finished reinstalling Windows, and now in disk management it has a "Disk 1" listed, as "Not Initialized". However, when I try to initialize it, I get "the request could not be performed because of an I/O error". I am selecting the MBR option for initializing. Restarting the computer now to install some updates and see what happens.

They're all equally annoying. I hate hard drives with a passion, but they're still a necessary evil for storage capacity.

Yeah, I just started the computer up again and now it's back to being invisible. Gonna return it. Thanks
