I just bought the WD1200JB hoping to get the newest version.
In the 200GB western digital article http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/02q4/021011/index.html there are two versions of the WD1200JB specified with different LBAs and mfg dates. New LBA is 234.442 billion (really supposed to be in the 100 millions, aka 234,442,xxx) and the old LBA is 234.375 billion. The new drive has 2 60GB platters, and the old has 3 40GB platters. The new 1200JB supposedly have a msf date of September or later, but a WD tech said the 200GB drives have been in production since July. The website for the 1200JB (http://www.wdc.com/products/products.asp?DriveID=27) specifies an LBA of 234,441,648, this is what my drive is labeled as well. The website specified 3 platters(hmm, weird)The mfg date of my drive is August 29, 2002, has the new LBA spec of 234,441,648(rounded this is 234.442 "billion"). Does anyone have an older 1200JB to verify the LBAs or does anyone know any more about this subject? I spoke to a WD tech, and they have no information about how to tell the difference between the old 40xl 1200JB and the new 60xl 1200JB.

Oh i forgot to mention this drive is replacing a 45gb 75GXP which had a head crash and ALL of my 3000+ MP3s, music videos, photo albums, SNL videos, etc are gone! Cheapest data recovery was $700!!! Where's my checkbook?<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by lassow on 10/24/02 03:54 PM.</EM></FONT></P>

I wouldn't put too much stock on WD website's specs about number of platters, density, LBA:s etc. They aren't exactly great at keeping you up to date about latest density improvements. I remember writing a post with some examples about it, but I'm feeling a bit too lazy to look it up. Lord High Grand, maybe you'd care to look it up, I have a vague recollection that you replied to it...

Well, my 1200JB came AND... it is more or less DOA. It detects, i partitioned it, but it takes minutes to copy a 50mb file to it from any other drive, CDROM, Ultra2 SCSI, ATA100. Anyone hear of this problem?

because SCSI really is that much better

Heh.
All you had to do was ask

Some people also think LHG stands for 'Loving Hamster Groupie'.

Regarding the JB drives, i cannot remeber exactly what i said, but W.D. have an annoying habbit of changing drive density's whenever it pleases them without telling people specifically. Its easy for noobs to know what capacity they are getting, but not for pro's who want the most out of the unit and want to know the number/density of platters.
<A HREF="http://www.storagereview.com" target="_new">http://www.storagereview.com</A> Also touched upon this annoying occurance too.

Drives that have changed in the past
1000JB ~ 3 x 33.3Gb or 3 x 40Gb (with 1 platter only half used)
600BB ~ 3 x 20Gb or 2 x 40Gb (1 platter half used)
1200JB ~ 3 x 40Gb or 2 x 66Gb

Yep. All the time. Most often the cauze is that winDOZE has for some reason disabled UDMA for the primary/secondary ide channel (who knows why).
Go into your device profile and change it to UDMA then reboot.
