Weak Network Signal. I might need a booster?

Hey everyone,

So i'm living in a new house and verizon put the router all the way in the basement with all the other stuff. My issue is my room is 2 floors up and in the back. When im in the loft the wireless is decent but when i walk into my room (5 feet away) the wireless is unbearable. I have a harwired ethernet plug in the loft which plugs up to my desktop.

My question is, is there some kind of booster so i can make the loft and the whole top floor of the house have better ethernet connection? I don't know much about wirless so all help would be appreciated.

You can grab a Wireless Range Extender from local electronics stores, I even have one now, I have it set up as a bridge, they aren't very expensive, but note, you will have a 30% speed decrease at the minimum, so be aware of that.

I guess my other question would be is there a difference between a "booster" and an "extender"? I have an ok connection i just want it to be stronger for streaming video without buffering, etc.

And that's what an extender is for, there isn't such thing as a booster, it's just kind of a nickname.

If theirs an Ethernet wire in the loft you want to plug in a wifi access point. or a 10$ switch then access point and pc.

A booster must be a wifi Repeater(Extender) that picks up the signal and re-broadcasts it aka boosts the range.

Access points (AP) tend to be cheap and only have 1 port and power.

Looks like most APs can act as repeaters without a wire, 'Booster' could be a bit confusing when there are 'booster Amplifiers' like this vv that probably wont work and i would think maybe illegal power output. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24P0NZ4335

after trying a few 'extenders' with intermittent anc slow speeds, I have gone for the powerline (tp-link 4220kit) solution. good though put and stable. after 3 months of heavy use with upto a dozen wifi clients, I won't go back !
