Weak performance on GTX 1070

Hello everyone,

I am using a GTX 1070 FE edition as a GPU but I get the feeling that it is not performing as it should be.

When playing games as GTA V and Total War Warhammer I 'only' get about 80-90 fps when playing on Medium settings. I have tried overclocking my GPU and although it helps it is still not reaching my expectations. I am aiming for 144 fps on Medium or better, since I am using a 144 Hz monitor.

I have checked my temps and they never go above 50 ° C, I even have a custom cooler so I do not think temps are the problem.

I am also using the latest drivers.

My specs are:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU
16 GB RAM

I am overclocking my CPU to 4,3 GHz, but even when disabling the overclock on my CPU I still have the 'low' frames.

Am I simply expecting too much from a GTX 1070?

If you need any more information please let me know, any help is appreciated because I have been trying to solve this issue for quite some time now 🙁.

So last night I ran a memtest to check my memory, the test reported that all was OK.
I have also used memtest to test my CPU and the results told me there were no errors.

I have disabled GEFORCE EXPERIENCE SHARING in the Geforce Experience menu but this gave me no extra frames.

In the bios I saw something about my memory being clocked at 1300.
Is this a normal value?

Am I simply expecting too much?

Thank you!

My CPU usage doesn't get higher than 60%, I have been watching it with MSI afterburner.

I did however swap one of my memory sticks a couple of weeks ago and if I recall correctly the issue has started around the same time. I don't know if this could have anything to do with it.

However when I check with dxdiag my computer recognizes all the sticks because the total is 16 GB which is correct.

Try going down to 8gb. Then try the other 8 gigs. See if either of those fix it.

I tried going down to 8gb but the results were the same. I've also tried the other 8gb in the other slots with the same results.

It could be that both games are very CPU intensive, I do not know. The CPU usage was coming from the total CPU usage and not per-core basis. I will investigate the per-core basis.

I also did the Heaven benchmark test and compared with other users with a GTX1070 and my results were pretty much the same.

Could it be that my CPU is being a bottleneck? I have no knowledge of CPU's so I can't tell.
I will report back with data on my CPU usage per core later tomorrow.

I looked at some benchmarks and the i7 2600k shouldn't be holding you back at all. The 1070 seems like it should be able to do more too. Are you using DX12? Some people are getting lower fps with Nvidia cards in DX12 than they are with DX11.

I also noticed you have a second monitor connected. If it's plugged into the 1070 you might try unplugging it to see if it affects framerates at all. It probably won't, but every once in a while you see something weird with dual monitor setups.

Thanks for your answer.
I tried with only my 144 Hz monitor connected but the issue remains. It seems that I am using DX12. I'll try to downgrade to DX11 and report back.

I can confirm that my CPU is the bottleneck for Total War Warhammer.
Running the game on Ultra give me a stable 50 fps, changing the settings the Low still gave me those 50 fps. So it has to be my CPU.

After doing some research it seems that upgrading my i7 will not increase my FPS by a lot. So I will probably have to spend some more time into overclocking.
