Weak wifi reception thru desktop when signal is strong

Hello,

My desktop wifi runs really slow. I can run a speed test using my phone and get 175mps with the phone literally behind the desktop. When running a speed test on the desktop I only get 3-15mps. Any ideas? My router runs on 2.4 and 5.0ghz. The desktop signal runs at 15-20mps when 2.4ghz is turned on but only runs at 2-3mps when the 2.4ghz channel is off and only 5.0 is on. The desktop is a Lenovo and is about 4 years old. Thanks.

I would suggest getting a dedicated wifi card for your desktop. I use to use those little usb thumb adapters, but found that I always lost signal on my desktop and have an overall poor connection. This was despite the fact that I was only about 15 feet away from the router (1 wall in the way). Once I switched to a rosewill N300 PCI-E card, it solved all my problems.
Seeing that this is a prebuilt, can you list the SKU for your Lenovo desktop? On another note, can you see if placing the desktop within a clear line of sight to your wireless router helps in improving the reception and bandwidth? If so then the culprit to your slow speeds is the number of walls, their thickness and perhaps other objects falling in the line of transmission.

It's always advised to have your router placed on a higher location than your electronic appliances like a fridge/microwave to avoid interference. If you have plumbing running through walls, it'll also help reduce signal strength and data transmission.

Lastly, can you state the make and model of your wireless router?

Thanks. All clear on the impact of distance, walls, etc. I can run speed tests on my phone sitting in the same spot and have significantly better speeds, as explained in my original post. The router is a Linksys EA9200.

Thanks! I will try that.
