Hi all,

What do you rifle shooters think of a Weatherby VANGUARD ?
I’ve been offered a brand new one for £270 in .308, is it worth the money?

Can anyone tell my if the .308 is short or long action?

Thanks

John

No experience of the Weatherby itself

Yup, gotta be worth that. Are you sure it's new?

>Can anyone tell my if the .308 is short or long action?

Neither, it's a medium action (same as the .243). In general, the
..222/.223 cartridges are a short action, .243/.308 are medium, the
..270/30-06 are long action, and then there's magnum as well. Depends on
the manufacturer. The latest Tikka rifle (the T3) does not have a short
action: if you buy a .223 rifle you get a .308 action and a blanked off
magazine. Not sure about Weatherby (tried their website?)

Yes, the chap has some sort of deal going with a well know shop.

I can only find reference to short and long actions, so presumably the
,308 must be short?
The reason I ask is that I’ve found a scope mount for the rifle but it’s
marked as short action and I know that the rifle will not come with
mounts.

Thanks for you help!

Hi there, Weatherby Vanguards sold in the USA are rebadged Howa 1500 rifles,
made in Japan. I don't know if they're the same thing on your side of the pond
or not.

If they are the rebadged Howas, the 308 should be a short action, and it should
take the same scope bases as a Remington 700. The European Vanguard may be a
different animal, though.

Yes the Euro vanguards are the same as Howa 1500’s.
I’ve been told that the rifles have to be up to weatherby standards are
are supplied with a test target (and load) to prove the rifles ability.

That’s a great bit of information, many thanks!
I’ll check our some 700 bases and if I buy the vanguard, I match the
bases up.

Thanks again.
