I have been using a pair of Devolo dLAN 500 AV Wireless+ for a couple of years and they work perfectly.In order to add a remote webcam to my setup I have purchased a Devolo dLAN 500 duo+ PLA and a Logitech c920 HD Pro webcam.In order to connect the webcam to the PLA I also ordered an adaptor, USB TO LAN RJ45 Ethernet 10Mb/100Mb Network Adapter (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000MHO3Q8/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item).This was slightly damaged on arrival, but I think that I have been able to repair it.

The webcam was plugged in to a powered Belkin USB hub and that was plugged into the adaptor, which in turn was plugged into the PLA.My computer cannot see the webcam, although if I plug it directly into a USB socket on the computer it works correctly.I have also checked that the computer can see the new PLA using Devolo Cockpit, (the control panel software).

I have also tried plugging a powered USB drive into the PLA via the adaptor but this also cannot be seen by my computer.Another test I tried was to plug my laptop into the PLA using an Ethernet cable, after disabling the wireless connection, to see if could access the internet and my network drive , which it can.

All of this suggests these possibilities :-
1.The adaptor is faulty and the replacement will solve my problem when I receive it;
2.I need a different type of adaptor;
3.What I am trying is impossible.

Can anyone suggest how to solve my problem please?

Solution
You have no chance to do what you want especially with the equipment you have.

The converter things is a complete rip off. It does not actually covert USB to ethernet it converts USB to rj45. RJ45 is only the specification for the cabling. I could hook a power cord to a RJ45 and all it would do is blow up my equipment if I tried to use it. Why it says Ethernet 10Mb/100Mb Network Adapter in the header is unknown but the device does not do that.

So lets assume you would get a actual ethernet adapter.

This device lets a COMPUTER use the USB port as a ethernet connection. This you could plug...

This device lets a COMPUTER use the USB port as a ethernet connection. This you could plug into the powerline with a normal ethernet cable and it would work. This device unlike the other one contains electronics.

Still it will not solve your problem. The camera is not a computer. There is no way to load the software drivers needed by this device into the camera.

If you had cat5e cable in the walls rather than the powerline devices you could use special USB extenders that can use cat5e cable to go distance. These also are not USB over ethernet these are USB over cat5e wire....even though many manufacture say ethernet.

Now lets assume you buy some the the devices that exist that DO actually carry USB over a network. These are normally sold as USB over IP. This does not magically give your web camera a IP address. All it does is take the USB cable carry the data over the network and then put it out on a USB cable on the far end. You still would need to plug this into a USB port on a computer.

The devices that can actually do what you want cost a lot more than a actual ethernet connected camera so you are better off tossing your camera and buying the correct one rather than messing around with converters.

This is why you can get a very fancy web camera for almost nothing but a network connect camera cost a lot. It must have all the extra hardware to talk to a network. It in effect has a small computer in it.

Many thanks for your detailed explanation, I was starting to think that I had decided to leap before I looked and you have convinced me that this is so.

Next time I'll try to do my research before I spend any money.
