As usual, I'll try to keep things brief.

I know virtually nothing about webcams, and I'm considering purchasing one.

Is there much variation between models? What do I look for? What do I avoid? Which brands are worth considering? Approximately what price should I be prepared to pay? [And other typical questions.]

Information and experiences appreciated.

Thanks.

Lots of questions, and maybe <A HREF="http://webcam.com/toolkit/default.asp?section=homewebcamsPc" target="_new">this site</A> has the answers... have a look.

Thanks, but my ISP won't let me visit the site. (It's too complicated and dull to bother explaining fully.)

I'd have researched webcameras myself, but there's such a monumental amount of information to wade through. (It's easiest to use these forums for some basic direction.)

Anyway, if you find the effort required to copy and paste the information, please do so. (No formatting necessary.) ;)

Better yet, does anyone know of a free html proxy service I could use?

Best advise for you on this subject is, cheaper is not better, wasted money on some cheaper ones, ended up with a Logitech high end, video is excellent but can't get the sound right. Haven't nailed down the problem yet as being hardware or software, but hopefully will soon.
