Weird CPU cooling issue

Hey guys,

About this Wednesday, my amd fx-8350 began to idle extremely hot. I'm talking about checking the temperature in the BIOS, and it being 60 degrees+. I'm currently using the stock cooler. When under even minor load, the temperature is around 58-65 degrees. I tried putting it under heavy load, and the temperature immediately shot up to over 70 degrees within a minute.

My first attempt to solve this problem was to check the heatsink for dust. After a thorough cleaning, my temperatures did not change.

Second up was to reapply thermal paste. Again, no dice. While reapplying the thermal paste, I went and made sure the heatsink was completely free of dust/obstructions. It was clean as a whistle.

My motherboard is an ASRock 970 Extreme4, and I've checked the temperatures with both the BIOS and Speedfan. I'm confident that the temperatures are correct, due to the CPU making a noticeable difference in the ambient temperature in the room, as well as being extremely hot in the vicinity of the CPU.

I was originally using this box to mine cryptocurrency, so it is housed in a milk crate. I've never had temperature issues when mining crypto in the months gone by, so I doubt that it is an airflow issue. I did order a aftermarket cooler for the CPU, but I don't know if that will fix this problem. The ambient temperature in the room is around 17-18 degrees

The CPU is receiving stock voltage, 1.375~. I could try undervolting it and see if that helps... I've not really messed with undervolting before, would this be something I should try, and if so, what voltage should I give it? Beyond that, what could be causing this problem?

Thanks guys.

It sure sounds like a bad cooler. Especially if it's been used for mining it's entirely possible that it's been burned out. It can look okay, but still have a defective fan. Hopefully the new cooler will fix it, otherwise your chip might have gone bad, but that's unlikely.
