I have a client, they have QuickBooks hosting on one computer and 7 or 8 other systems talk back to it. Recently that computer "QB Server" was changed out for a new one set up exactly how it was. The old one "QB Server" was repurposed as a workstation. Fresh windows load, Well Dell factory reset. Every other computer on the network has 0 issues talking to the new QB server/workstation. Shared company file folder to Everyone with read wright and password protected sharing is turned off, use account has no password. All the sudden the repurposed system no longer can access the QBserver/workstation I get error an "extended error has occurred" I have tried the following
  • firewalls off
  • verified share and permissions on host system, no other systems have an issue
  • firmware and drivers update
  • All OS updates isnatlled
  • SFC/scannow
  • Disabled and enabled file sharing services
  • created another account on the computer
  • created an account on that computer to match the "server" computer
  • created an alternate account on server computer with password.
  • last thing was download and ran windows repair. Looks like something new with 11. Looks like an in place upgrade/repair just without needing the windows disk/installer
Her is what else is interesting. I can create a shared folder on any system and access it, This system will prompt for user name and password to access said folder. As soon as I turn password protected sharing off on the host I'd get the an extended error has occurred.
What am i missing what in there is blocking communication?

Group Policy.

On two or three of the workstations that connect without problems to the new QB server take a look at/print out their respective Group Policy configuration settings.

Then do the same for the original QB Server that has been converted to workstation system

Compare the configuration settings looking for some difference in the converted workstation settings.

Likely some priviledge or access rights has been overlooked or incorrectly set.

Odd question. Is the repurposed server running a different OS flavor? Like Pro/Enterprise/Home. In days past I found subtle differences between the security policies of the variants.

One weird one was that the minimum database password length was 6 characters on Enterprise, but 4 characters on Pro. One of our vendors used a local database with a sub 6 character password, it was just an image library, but the whole program refused to install.
