Hi all,
I hope someone can help me solve a very persisting and distressing problem.
I have gone through the Microsoft Discusion Groups and found some comfort in
seeing that other people have similar problems. However the fixes suggested
to them either did not work for me or just gave temporary relief then the
problem gradually reappered, becoming more severe as time goes by.
I hope someone can help me!
Just for info I have a SonyVaio laptop bought dec-2003 running XP Pro SP2. I
have an Alps touchpad and a Basic USB Optical Mouse. I regularly run McAfee
VirusScan, Ad-Aware and Spybot.
Problem: When I move my mouse, the cursor jumps to one of the 4 corners, or
generally to one of the sides of the screen. So that when I click, it is
usually on something else or just in the vacuum, and I always have troubles
finding where my cursor is.
At the beginning the problem was hardly noticeable, just a minor nuisance,
and then became gradually more severe so that in the end it became impossible
usin g the mouse and I had to use my touchpad instead. At one point, when the
problem was at its worse, and I had not yet done anything about it, I
repeatedly saw my cursor moving alone across the screen to get to one corner
– I swear my hands were on my lap and nothing was touching either the mouse
or the touchpad – creepy!
I have tried a several things (listed below) and after some of them, the
problem seemed to have disappeared, but it was short relief and the problem
would gradually reappear within a few days.
Note that when the mouse is connected, the touchpad also gives problems,
i.e. sometimes I can’t seem to “unstick� the pointer from whatever corner it
got to (though I normally “unstick� it quite easily with the mouse). If I
disconnect the mouse, the touchpad works fine.
Interesting, my boyfriends who has an older computer than mine running with
Windows 2000, is experiencing the same problem (that runs out a suspicion
that SP2 might be responsible). He actually got the problem before me, and as
the problem started more or less around the time we set up a common wireless
network and internet connection, I suspected an infection-and-reinfection
process, but could not find anything on his computer or on mine until now.
I do hope you guys can help me!
This is what I have tried up to now:
a- Different mices, all optical, with cord or wireless, different make –
short relief, but problem came back gradually.
b- Under Mouse Setting Properties, I tried to vary pointer speed, and
selecting and unselecting various options such as: <Swap left and right
buttons functions> (I use the mouse left handed), <Enhance pointer
precision>, <Automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog
box>, <Display pointer trail>, <Hide pointer while typing>, <Show location of
pointer when I press the CTRL key>, etc – no effect whatsoever.
c- Checked for viruses, malwares, scumware, and generally cleaned up my
computer – nothing major found – no change in the problem.
d- Checked that I had no software allowing for remote control of my computer
and disinstalled a few suspicious programmes – no change
e- Checked that I had all the Windows critical updates and patches – I had.
f- Installed latest Intellipoint driver, went through point b again, and
then disinstalled it because the problem persisted and I had lost some useful
properties of my built-in touchpad&mouse driver.
g- Went to the Sony site and downloaded and installed all possible
mouse-related updates and drivers – short relief, but problem came back
gradually.
h- Checked the Windows site for Official Notices about this problem – found
none.
i- Checked the Microsoft discussion group site for postings on similar
problem – found a few but they did not seem to shed any light on what really
causes the problem or any suggestion of fixes that I had not already tried.
j- Installed TweakUI and played around with the mouse properties -- no change.
Any other idea or suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
