Weird "stains" on monitor

I was cleaning my monitor (ASUS VS239-HP) with a wet microfiber cloth and I noticed that my monitor has these dark spots that are only visible when the area is wet. They look like stains but they do not wipe off. There is nothing wrong with the display when the monitor is on. Is this normal? I've only had this monitor for a few months and this is the first time I've cleaned the screen. Are they stubborn stains that I need to use a cleaning solution to remove? I don't notice these spots any other way but I am curious as to what caused them. Thanks.

It happens. I've had the same monitor for the past 5 years (I know, time for a better model by now...) and it happens when I clean off the screen where you get these weird blotches/stained looking areas. I wouldn't worry about it (and I never have) considering how often, honestly, is your monitor wet? And as soon as you turn the thing on, they go away as the liquid evaporates. Don't sweat it.

Those stains can be almost anything.. here's a few possibilities:

• If a kitchen is near by, or air currents favor the travel of smoking kitchen oil, it can cool and settle on anything.

• If you have a snack in front of the computer, and before washing your hands you touch the monitor, there you go!

• We all have fatty substances on facial skin; If you unwillingly touch your face and later touch the monitor, you will leave spots, smudges, even finger prints. Even sweat can leave stains particularly noticeable on smooth surfaces

• If you're having a soft drink, cofee, fruit juice, etc while on the computer.. you talk, laugh, sneeze, cough, you can project some of it on the monitor. Even plain water can leave mineral deposits where it dries off.

If a cloth damp with warm water doesn't remove the spots, dampen it with something stronger like: Isopropyl/rubbing/surgical spirit/denatured alcohol, ethanol, white vinegar, Vodka :) Either of these in a 50/50 mixture with distilled water

Thank you for the responses! I figured it was probably stains that set-in, although I never knew that could happen. I guess I'll mix some 99% isopropyl alcohol with water and go from there.
