Alright this has a bit of a story to it but these problems have made my PC a $5000 paperweight and I'd really like some help...

I'm ltry and make this as short as I can: I bought a product key for Win10 in Japan where I was stationed. Since I moved back to the states, obviously it was invalidated. So I bought a new product key for a new build of the OS. (you're welcome, microsoft)

Since then, my internet will always show "Limited", my "Settings" menu (the gear you see when you click the Windows logo: with internet options, device activation, etc.) will only stay open for about five seconds before closing without warning, and I can't access options from the toolbar (like internet connections) anymore. Also I can't change any firewall settings from the looks of things.

I've tried all the command prompt entries I've seen on the internet and nothing so far is helping.

I'm really hoping for someone who's 100x smarter than me to see this and help.

Thanks for reading !

I think the problem regarding your network problems is related to either hardware failure of the wifi device or some settings in windows and in no way related to windows activation key. Because most of the time, windows 10 in particular auto recognizes wifi devices just off the bat.
I would format the HDD and reinstall Windows from scratch. It sounds to me like possibly the new key was for a difference version of Windows 10, like Pro vs Home edition or something.

I am not sure why your Windows should have been invalidated because you move though. Once activated, it is activated. People move to other countries all the time. I have friends and relatives in the military and none of them ever had to buy a new license to use overseas.

I think you bought your first key from a shady place online or offline, now those keys gets invalidated often. Do a virus scan using malwarebytes antimalware and run a registry cleaner tool like ccleaner. You can however reinstall windows and it will fix the issue

This. If you bought a legitimate copy, you wouldn't have to buy a new license because you moved back to the U.S.

To all: I got my last product key from the windows store and it activated via my Microsoft account or whatever, and I did a weird reset thing, and I have access to my options but now I think my Wi-Fi drivers aren't working so, still no internet connection

1. Just moving the system from Japan to the US does not unactivate your OS.
2. Where did you buy the second OS from?

If there is an exclamation mark by the driver in device manager, you probably should go to the manufacturer website from another comouter amd download the driver to a usb flash drive.

I got my current copy of windows purchased in europe and in order to make it work here, all I had to do was talk to microsoft. They confirmed my old key and then gave me a new one for the correct region (and invalidated the previous one). You shouldn't have had to purchase a new one.

All that being said, I would talk to microsoft support directly about this issue. You can do the online support thing once you log into the microsoft account. They were pretty prompt for me, and the whole process took 5 min tops. Just explain the whole story and they'll walk you through the validation.
