Question Weird visual artifacts with newish GeForce 1060 GTX, failing OCCT VRAM test

Oct 21, 2021
Hi everyone, I have a VRAM related problem (I think).

Last week I was playing a game (Ashen) and went to the bathroom. When I came back, my screen was full of weird visual artifacts:
I have tried a few games and had similar results:
With some exceptions: old games don't display the issue, and a few select recent games with less intensive graphics (Crash Bandicoot remasters, Overcooked 2).

I installed OCCT and did all the tests. The 3D test came back fine, but the VRAM test gives me millions of errors even on 10% load, and Gpumemtest also crashes.

My computer is an Acer Predator G3-571 gaming laptop with a GeForce GTX 1060. It was probably built in 2018 but I bought it new 6.5 months ago. Hilariously it had a 6 month warranty (unfortunately standard where I live - Vietnam). I have tried completely removing all Nvidia drivers and supporting software using their tool, and with the windows method. I've also done a clean install of windows 10 (originally I was on a W11 insider build but I downgraded).

So what I'm wondering is:
  • Is this likely a VRAM problem?
  • If so, what, if anything, can usually be done?
  • Is there anything I can do to diagnose this more accurately before I take it into repair?
  • If I take it in for repair, what can I expect them to say?
I'm reasonably technically inclined (software engineer) but not really knowledgeable about hardware. I can take my laptop apart and do stuff if I have some guidance on what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated,
