Weirdest Problem Ever!

Weirdest problem I've faced.

I have a computer which fails to start windows 7 ultimate 32-b OS. I tried to reinstall the OS (Clean install), but it failed to recognize any bootable devices (DVD drive, USB etc). I plugged my internal hard disk to my friend's computer and clean installed the OS. Worked perfectly fine on his computer. I bring it back to my place and hook it up to my computer and it won't load. I immediately thought it was a hardware causing the problem. I tried restarting with the DVD drive disconnected and other hardware troubleshooting but to no avail.

Here's the catch though. I've a bootable disc of Ubuntu 11.04, which I tried and voila! It installed without any issues. Works fine, but I'm essentially a Windows user and need Windows 7 (Also Windows 8, server 2008 and 2012) for my everyday use.

I'm absolutely clueless as to why my computer won't accept Windows bootable devices but accepts Ubuntu.

Any sort of help would be appreciated.

P.S: I have tried the basic steps like LKGC, safe mode, fixing MBR from cmd prompt in the Advanced startup repair.

Is it a legit copy used within the licensing terms? Do you have to activate it?

Is the drive seen in bios? Is it plugged in to the no.1 sata port? And has sata power to it?

What make and model drive is it?

Try your friend's boot drive in it. Put it in your friend's pc again not as boot drive and do a checkdisk/repair on it. Do a virsus scan on it.

Yes. I have to activate it. I have the product key. However, this doesn't make sense as the same OS loads when connected to a different mother board.
Yes. The drive is seen in the bios. It's a 500 GB WD. WD5000AAKX. It is plugged into the SATA port. To check if it has SATA power, I swiched the ports with the DVD drive. I think it has the power.

Checkdisk has been done already. I will have to try another boot drive on this mother board to check if it is a mother board issue.

Again, it does not explain how I am able to install and run Ubuntu on the exact same setup.

Yes. Before installing Ubuntu, I had made a clean install of Win7. So yes, it was the only OS on the HD. So I have done multiple clean installs of W7 and currently on Ubuntu trial directly from the CD. It had been running on 32 b since 3 years. During the multiple clean installs, I also tried the 64 bit with the same result.

Well, this seemed like such a strange and complicated issue, it was a very basic sort of a mistake from my end (Of course, I didn't know about this till now).

Turns out my DVD drive doesn't boot from DVD-R discs 🙁
I put in a DVD+R bootable Win7 disc and it worked like a charm. Who wudda thunk?
Also, pretty obviously, there was an issue with the USB drive I'd made bootable.

Issue resolved. Thanks for the help anyway i7Baby. Appreciate your time and patience.
