Like was suggested, alt.games.everquest2 was hijacked because I made the
mistake of posting a proposal to alt.config that I didn't follow through
on immediately. IE, someone took my proposal and submitted it on the sly,
most likely WITHOUT the charter. Not sure what affect this has, but if
someone now notices that it exists on their newsserver, 'twasn't me that
did it.

The effect will be, since they didn't go through the 'correct channels'
to create the group, there's about 100 self appointed netcops that will
start issueing repeated 'kill group' commands in the control groups as
soon as they see it pop up.

So it will be almost impossible to get it created and propagated.

At least that's what happened to a friend of mine.

Technically it's also 'without charter' but how many people read a
charter anyway?

Here is the control message received at my news server, apparently
meant as a jab at you. Nevertheless, this will get it added on servers
which blindly accept newgroups for alt.*. Admins who review the alt
newgroup requests are probably going to ignore it (unless they are
familiar with EQ2). There is no reason you can't post or have someone
post a control message with proper charter later on, of course.

Hey! I want my own vanity group too! Maybe I should go over to
alt.config and submit alt.games.the-sims2.

Well... I guess you could always try again with it as "alt.games.eq2"

Hi Foxeye

I wonder why anyone would want to hijack it, or to say it was a
"vanity" group of yours? That little dig was uncalled for, as you are
only trying to help. Thanks for your efforts, by the way.

Because alt.config is a favorite play toy of trolls and general
internet "griefers", unfortunately... And that's -because- of its
purpose.

I think there is someone there just targeting any and every newsgroup
proposal they can (I believe the source is from Poland, bizarrely
enough)...it isn't personal to me. But it's still annoying, especially as
all guide sites SAY to wait 7 days after posting your proposal to
alt.config. That advice is rather dangerous right now. >:/

Against my better judgement I went ahead and submitted a proper control
statement with a charter and a comment saying it was hijacked. I
hesitated to, because I know a lot of folks still don't want it, but I
wasn't sure if there was harm to myself or the future of an
alt.games.everquest2 (if one is needed later) to leave it as-is.

FWIW, I believe that even at this point I would have to run about
promoting the NG to news servers to get it widely available, so I don't
*think* I've caused any lasting harm if it does end up that it is better
to keep everyone here.

I think the number of news admins that bother to monitor alt.admin can
be counted without removing your shoes at this point. The big news
distribution servers dont have filter lists or even newsgroup lists
anymore. They are more news routers than servers at this point, they
pass on anything they get. Outside universities, news admins aren't paid
enough to care anymore, and have way too much to do to bother checking
if a newsgroup recieved a proper discussion.

Unlike newgroup messages, most servers are configured to mail
deletegroup commands and mail them to the news admin, who might get
around to reading it or may not.

There are news routers which simply pass traffic, and there are
the news servers to which readers connect. The latter definitely do
keep a list of active groups (or the NNTP LIST command can't work),
so something must be done with the newgroup control messages.

Traditionally, the default config for alt.*, in INN at least, was
to automatically act on newgroups and mail delgroups to the admin.
Abuse in the form of newgroup floods from Hipcrime et al made this
a lot less attractive although I imagine there are more than a few
servers which still do it.

The most common policy nowadays is probably to just drop any newgroup
in alt and wait for a reader to request it.

Myself, I have alt newgroups set up to mail, and I read them and
add the ones that include reasonable justification. There aren't
that many to deal with. But, no, I don't monitor alt.config.
