Half-life 2 is undoubtedly a wonderful game as far as the graphics
are concerned. Steam is just a minor nuisance, and there's no getting
away from the fact that a game like HL2 needs hardware to match. So
essentially, I have no complaints about the game. Still, to my mind,
the original HL was the more enjoyable game. Being an old codger, the
pace in HL2 is sometimes a bit too hectic for me. I prefer to be able
to sneak around a bit, take in the surroundings, plan my next move.
You needed to be careful about how to use your ammunition in HL. There
was a wonderful weirdness in the latter part of the game, there
was a balance of the known and the unknown, the safe and the
dangerous. The kind of thing that can't be done twice, I suppose.

Hear hear. Nice to see you liked it.

I agree with the last point though; it's very hard to reproduce the
greatness of the original in any sequel, be it a game or movie or
whatever. Though, I did think that it was quite possible to take in your
surroundings in HL2, probably better than you could do in the original
HL. The levels were bigger in HL2 with more detail, so more exploring
could be done and hence more things to look at. Enemies don't spawn in
like in the original, so if an area is cleared, it's probably safe to
look around at your leisure.

I agree with both of the points you have made. I still remember the
first time I played HL and spent the first 5 mins or so thinking what
the f**k is going on, where's my gun, where are the baddies - then as
the experiment started I can't think of a gaming experience I can
compare it to. HL2 really can be immersive, I think just down to the
exceptional graphics/physics engine but in terms of revolutionary
gameplay not a scratch on HL, then again I didn't expect it to be. Just
replaying HL (source) again after not playing it for 3+ years and it's
still a damn good game.

Just started original HL last night and played until 5am when the missus
began giving me the evil eye. Where's a head crab when you need one?

I agree that the immersive play is pretty darn good. The 5-second level
loading doesn't hurt either 🙂

There are several sections where the enemies do keep respawning. Some
of them keep spawning until a set number have been spawned. Others keep
coming indefinitely. There's a secret Zombie in Ravenholm that keeps
reappearing in a dead end everytime you run past a trigger point.

Hehe keep 'em comming
So true
I you have alerted the lot they keep spawning no matter what you do
quite frustrating
Would've been nice if you can settle things a little until next time
you alert the lot
Could give the gameplay a twist to the better in that area

I found that if you are on a good "hard spot" and not on sand, when you
kill off some antlions, not as many spawn. Soon, you can kill them off.
Maybe THEY have to also come off the sand. Whichever, it takes a while
:) And the buggers fly too. I spent a LOT of time dealing with em :\

Heh. When I meant spawning, I meant the Xen-style green lightning and
then an enemy appears from nowhere (ala original HL). I guess that can't
happen in HL2 due to the brainwashed Combine humans already being in the
areas.
