I've been trying to o'clock the Ripjaws V DDR4 4266 2x16GB kit in my z390, 9700k build I have and was looking over RAM timings for similar Coffeelake builds. It seems like peeps w/4x8GB of DDR4 get much faster and tighter memory timings than peeps with 2x16GB. Is this all down to 8GB DIMMs being single rank as opposed to dual rank? Are all 16GB DDR4 DIMMs dual rank?

It's a mixture of other factors, like higher quality binning of IC's as well as IC vendors, BIOS versions for motherboard's, Integrated Memory Controllers and the general silicon lottery.

You might want to elaborate on the peeps part, with examples of people with fruitful setups.

My survey of coffeelake CPUs w/4x8GB DIMMs vs. 2x16GB DIMMs was small, so maybe you're right it could be those other factors were more significant. I have to do a lot more research to document it thoroughly and it's a dead platform.
