Western Digital is "broken"?

Hello,

I'm using the Western Digital WD20EARX-00PASB0 Ata Device Harddrive hard drive. I don't know how long I already have it (probably more than 2 years), and except some issues with it disconnecting it (which were resolved easily), I had no problems.
Until last Friday.

So, watching youtube videos, a new video I opened just didn't load. This was nothing new and I thought that just something was happening, as I was still able to visit other internet pages. So instead, I opened a video that was saved on my computer, hoping that that problem will be gone soon.
But, as the video opened, it started for maybe 0.1 second or so, but stopped at 00:00.

So, of course, that was when I realised that something is definitivly wrong, and I decided to "turn it off and on again". My computer shut down without any problems, however, the boot up on the other hand...

It loaded my System-Drive, (one from Hitachi, (which is multiple years older) and my DVD-drive, but then it hang up on "loading IDE drives" which of course was my Western Digital harddrive. Even after unpluging all my USB-Devices (which sometimes fixed the problem), the drive wasn't loaded.

I then opened my desktop case (this one). As I am a total hardware noob, I opened it on the "wrong" side, so I had no access to the cable connecting the harddrive to the computer.
I tried to pull it out (which didn't work of course), so I shove it back inside, and heard a *click* sound. Then, I turned my computer on, and hey, it worked again.

For some hours, until the same thing happened again.

After opening it up on the correct side (which allowed me to look at the cables), I checked the cables, and they were all still plugged in. So I took it out, changed the little thing it was lying on, and put it back in its original place. And it actually worked, as on Saturday (and Sunday), everything was fine for ~22 hours.

But yeah, on Sunday, ~5pm (17:00), the same thing happened again.

I then chose to change the place where my Western Digital drive is. Instead of it being under my Hitachi drive is, it is now above, meaning that the power cable changed, but the SATA cable is still the same.

And my computer booted again, and around 5-6 hours later, and I have the same problem again.

What doesnt work is:
- Can't load videos (with firefox or chrome)
- Can't open videos (vlc/windows media player) (doesn't matter if they are on my Western Digital or Hitachi drive)
- Can't open games/programes (the process is still visible in the task manager, but they don't do anything or open a window)

What I can do is:
- Copy/paste between my 2 drives
- Download stuff on my Western Digital drive
- Run checks on my system with Windows commands or Western Digital's "DLGDIAG"

What I didn't try yet:
- Running a virus check with Kaspersky

What I'm going to try:
- Do an extended search with Western Digital's "DLGDIAG" (had it already running for ~40 minutes, so far so good)
- Running a virus check with Kaspersky
- Maybe switch the SATA-cable from my Hitachi drive to my Western Digital drive (or looking if I find a new one)

What I already did:
- Running a chkdsk /f /r on my Hitachi drive, because I thought that would help. It didn't.
- Swich the place and the power cable of my Western Digital drive.

System information (Hopefully this helps):

OS: Windows 10 Home 64-Vit-Version (10.0, Build 14393)
Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Proccesor
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
Hard Drive #1 (for OS): Hitachi HDT725025VLA380
Hard Drive #2 (for everything else): Western Digital WD Green WD20EARX 2TB
Computer case: NZXT Phantom 630

Thanks for reading this long wall of text. If you need more information, feel free to ask.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Hi there Siaoun,

That is really unpleasant. 🙁
My suggestion would be to back up the data stored, as the drive is still accessible.

Did the DLG tests finish? You can run both short and extended DLG tests. The results should give us some information on the drive's health status.
Is the drive under warranty?
Yeah, I believe it would be a really nice idea to use a different SATA cable as well.

Cheers,
D_Know_WD :)

Hello D_Know_WD,

thanks for replying :)

To answer your question about the warranty... I don't know, but I don't think so. I/My father bought it a couple of years ago, and I don't have the receipt either.

I'll check if I have a different SATA cable somewhere, and if not... Well, doesn't hurt to have 1 more, right?

I just finished the quick and extended test (which took 6 hours and checked ~3.9 billion sectors <.<) and it seems that my harddrive passed the tests.

Here is also what the SMART status says. Maybe/Hopefully that helps.

Thanks,

Siaoun

Edit: I forgot to mention this, but even though I had the problem again while writing my first post. After I started my computer today, I didn't have do touch my hard drive, for it to work... Maybe it really is a problem with the cable? Because I tend to my my Computer around alot (I've put it on wheels, so to say), so maybe thats why?
