Okay, this is summary of what's been chosen and who's chosen it by the end of
month 1 (i.e. now). Anyone who hasn't followed the template (i.e. selected
purchases on a monthly basis) isn't included - it seems there was at least one.
To prevent the posts being too unwieldy I'll split the Tale into WFB and 40k
posts. So far for WFB we have (in the order I have them saved on my computer):

Philip Bowles (Dark Elves):

Kourzan, Dark Elf Noble with great weapon and Sea Dragon cloak.
30 Dark Elf Warriors with spears and shields (full command)
16 Dark Elf Warriors with repeater crossbows

+ 1 Warrior

Total: 651pts
Saved: -£0.50

Joakim Hemsle/Ewok (Wood Elves)

Glade Guardian (Scarloc)
11 Glade Guard (full command)
5 Archers
5 Archers

+ standard bearer and left side unicorn

Total: 401pts
Saved: £1

Sam Campbell/manickze (Cult of Slaanesh)

Dark Elf Sorceress (Mark of Slaanesh, Darkstar Cloak, Dispel Scroll)
Druchii Anointed (Blade of Ruin, Quickening Blood)
16 Dark Elf Warriors with spears and shields (full command, Mark of Slaanesh)
12 Devoted of Slaanesh

Total: 822pts
Saved: AU$2.40

Joe Boster/Desert Lurker (High Elves)

High Elf Commander with sword, shield and heavy armour on barded Elven Steed
16 Spearmen
16 Archers
6 Swordmasters of Hoeth (full command)

Total: 543pts (approx.)
Saved: £2

Christof Bell (Lizardmen)

Skink Priest
24 Skink Skirmishers
24 Skink Skirmishers

Total: 353pts+
Saved: E20 (paints and army books are free, remember)

Note for Cristof: Southlands loses Saurus Cavalry but can take all other units
(though often with restrictions). They gain Horned One Riders (Skink Cold One
cavalry) and Skink Cohorts (ranked infantry).

So, a Tale of Five Gamers (Maka and Donovan Borman gave army lists and overall
costs but didn't select their first month's purchases), and we've managed to
get one of each type of Elf army (aside from the Sea Patrol). Fluffily it's
good for the Dark Elves - either DE army could plausibly be found fighting any
of the others save for Wood Elves, who they have very little contact with. I've
left Chris Valera's Brets out for the time being since I'm not very clear on
what his initial purchases were in the end, but I'll allow him a late entry for
month 1 if he likes; after all he was so enthusiastic he did post half a dozen
times... BTW Donovan and Maka are in, too, if they select the first month (now
two months') purchases from their planned armies.

Right, onto month 2...

Damn google groups...

I already had two boxes of bret men-at arms-lying around, and picked up
a third. Actually is was a fourth, which means I have one too many.
Trade for skellies?

Next purchase was three morathi blisters, and a green knight. After
that was two boxes of knights. I'm over budget but it'll take me
forever to paint 'em anyway.

Oleg Bonaduski. A Kislevite with capitalist dreams. Former caravan guard on
the silk road, a made man after fiddling the books on a few runs. Still
maintains connections among the Ogres he's worked with.

Captain (formerly Imperial Sergeant) Schornhauser. The leader of a ragtag
band that are the remnants of an Imperial expedition to Albion. Due to his
utter lack of navigational skills the Captain has traveled all over the
Warhammer world trying to return to Middenheim only to find the Empire under
siege. Kislev seemed safer...and now more profitable!

The Knights of the Shining Coin as they're known to those who know them, a
group of Brettonian mounted squires deserted from a pack of suicidal
idiots...er...Errantry army, who've used the chaos of the Storm of Chaos to
self-elevate by means of plundering the various battlefields and farms and
villages etc. Fortunately for Oleg these frogs haven't run into another
mercenary who speaks Brettonian or they'd realise TWO copper pieces was
chump change and not a peasant's fortune.

Part of Captain Schornhauser's Albion expedition, they've long ago replaced
their gunpowderless and worn out handguns with crossbows. Much easier on the
ears, too, they find.

Fritze's Fodder and Maximillian's Meatshields as they're lovingly known to
the pikemen. Swordsmen from the Albion expedition for the mostpart, the lack
of strict Imperial doctrine allows these men to run around with plenty of
space between them to better display their swashbuckling derring-do (and
block line of site to pikemen)

The weight of Captain Schornhauser's Albion remnants are exactly 40 spearmen
who've figured if a spear is good, a pike is better! goodbye strict Imperial
military doctrine hello fighting in 4 ranks and +1 strength vs. cavalry!
Good thing too for Mercenary Guild bylaw 100-43.4 strictly states the only
ranked human close combat troops allowed in a mercenary army are pikemen!

Bahhhhh I wondered if my post ever made it, apparently not!

OK I bought blind (no codex!) a small balanced high elf force (so it must be
useless) of 1 box of cavalry, 1 box of archers and 1 box of spears for £45
and kept the £5 for next month.

This gave me:

8 Silver Helms
18 Archers leader and standard
18 Spears Leader and Standard

sorry for the delay!

More Elves. My, aren't they popular these days... I don't remember having seen
this one before, so your last post can't have made it. However, each HE
infantry box only contains enough for 16 models including parts for command
figures (though some great command figures can be made from the components -
the Archers box is still one of the best from a bitz point of view). Still, for
a core force I'd probably have gone with two Spearmen boxes and the Silver
Helms to give two full core units (and you can make characters out of any spare
Spearmen).

How are you converting the pikes - just chopping the axeheads off the halberds?

Ahhh I was under the impression they were 20 to a box, I shall revise.

Month 1

8 Silver Helms
14Archers, leader and standard
14 Spears, leader and standard

£5 carried over.

Month 2

1 box Spears £15
1Repeating Bolt Thrower £10
Pack High Elf Mages £8

so overspent by £3.

the army is as follows:

8 Silver Helms
14Archers, leader and standard
14 Spears, leader and standard
14 Spears, leader and standard
1 Mage on foot
1 Mage mounted (probably hides in the Silver Helms)
1 Repeating BoltThrower

Balanced nice small coherent force. I don't seem to have grasped this do I?

Ah, but both of your spearmen units are woefully understrength, so you're doing
well in that regard at least...

Missed this over the new year, so apologies for being a little late.

Both spearmen units are small, but can easily be combined into a single
25-30 strong unit for a little more resilience. Or the eventual third box
of spearmen will make both up to 24. You need to drop something to fit it
into a 1000 point force, so a handful of spearmen would not be missed.

But why do neither unit have musicians? Waste of points? Or some other
reason?

And is the standard in the archer unit not a 100VP liability, as even a a
4x4 unit perched on a suitable multilevel hill they will struggle to beat
anything but the weakest fast cav.

I started collecting HE with the first WHFB boxed set, and this looks very
similar, the only difference is I had units of 20 plastic infantry, and the
box of only 5 metal silver helms.

Regards
Alan
