Rubbish. Bret Knights are decent enough, but the plastic peasantry's
bland and the rest forgettable. I'd say that at the moment the Empire
has the best overall range (and you don't have to use Spearmen if you
don't want...) followed by High Elves (with the new RBT crew and so
long as you swap Archer heads for spare Spearmen helmets). Wood Elves
are still good, but the age of the basic troops is starting to show.
For the rest, I'd nominate as being as good or better than Brets the
Lizardmen (don't go by the GW paintscheme - Saurus are very good
models, at least when armed with spears, and Skinks are decent even
with blowpipes, while the only models in the range I'd actually call
poor are the Kroxigor) and non-Khorne mortal Chaos. That's five at
least who come in better than the Brets. I'd rank Bretonnians about
equal with the Dark Elves - the DE have better models for most units,
but they're let down badly by godawful monsters, the Cauldron and
Witch Elves, while the Brets are distinctly average across the range
without anything especially terrible, but without anything save the
Green Knight and perhaps the hippogrif to compare with Executioners,
Black Guard, the Reaper bolt thrower or the Manflayers.

Plus, they are Bretonnians! And with my minimal Painting skills Painting
Space Marine scouts can be a challenge. I do like the empire, (model &
fluff wise) Lizards, and Tomb Kings. But I had/have the empire and have
always liked the High Elves. (Plus I don't really like 'Bad Guy'
armies.) My thought was to start out as a warband and grow the army
monthly from there. Would this make a good final army or is it better to
start with a 2K list. I like the flexibility to purchase what I am
likely to paint. A Bonus one the High elves is that I still have the old
plastics from the 4th ed box.
