What’s best for gaming

I’ve had a lot of gaming headsets disappoint me and now I want to buy a real pair of headphones. But there’s a problem, I’ve been doing a lot of research, some recommend closed back others open back designs and I don’t know what to chose. Some say that the HD 598 is the best headphone for under 250 cad but some say that they aren’t that good. Others will recommend the dt 770 and they are closed and I just don’t know what to choose. I know open back designs gives you a wider sound stage but I really get what it is.

Please help, thank you.

I've had the Sennheiser HD555 (open), and now use Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 80 Ohm (closed). I prefer the DT-770 Pro in sound quality, comfort, and durability.

On closed design you get more studio like sound. Kinda like comparing a studio album to a live concert album. There's less ambiance and spatiality, but everything sounds tight and unaltered, as it was meant to be. Plus bass is tighter with more emphasis. Plus you won't disturb others with the noise if that's an issue, and it's easier to track game sounds, like enemy footsteps. I also find it's great if you live in a noisy neighborhood with lots of sirens and such.

For a long time I thought open would be best, partly because I was influenced by many saying it's better for movies...

For a long time I thought open would be best, partly because I was influenced by many saying it's better for movies. It does kinda open up the sound stage of movies, which can to a degree make it feel like a larger than life experience in movies like Star Wars and such, but honestly, I have not regretted going closed, even for movies. You may lose a little ambiance, but you gain more distinct dialog, and much of movie sound is dialog.

Amazon.ca has the DT-770 Pro 80 Ohm right now for $217, but they had them over last Xmas holiday for $165. So you might get a much better deal if you wait a few months.

I've had expensive headsets and then I tried the HyperX Alpha after my G633 wire got fucked and replacement costs over 45 euro. They are much more comfortable, seem more durable and even the sound is extremely good. The only thing they lack is RGB and a personal app that you can use to change settings. Besides that, the mic is the clearest I've ever had, has a boost also, your voice will no longer sound like a robot and they are much cheaper it seems in Canada too.

So if you wanna save a buck I'd say give them a try, if not, just refund them I guess. But they blew my mind how good they are for such a low price.
