I want to upgarade both my RAM and my CPU. I'm thinking to get a phenom ii x6 1055t compatible with my ASRock N68-S motherboard, I'm also thinking of getting only one RAM of 8gb and not 2 of 4gb, this due to my previous problems with the second RAM socket. Said that I don't know what specification or number should I take on mind while choosing my RAM. The motherboard specification http://www.asrock.com/mb/NVIDIA/N68-S/ says only that it should be a ddr2 RAM but when i search online for RAM i see other specifications like for example " PC2 5300p 555 12 k3" or "HMP31GP7AFR4C-Y5".
What are this numbers and how can i get to know what numbers should i use to get my own RAM?
Thank you

thank you for your answer. if possible i'll buy 2x4GB ram but still there is the problem that i had some time ago when i added another 1GB ram in the second slot. it created a conflict with my pc. the pc couldn't start and it said that the hard drive is empty (no file found on hard drive). after i removed the ram i added it started normally and all my files were where i last left them. where do you think the fault was? on the ram chip i added or on the ram slot on the motherboard? sorry for my total incompetence on electronic knowledge.

Probably an incompatibility with the added 1gb of ram,it happens.Taking the ram out made it right again.Sometimes when you add ram it will not play with the stick(s) already in the system and things like this happen, can also be that it's not supported by the motherboard.

When having ram already in the system you try to find ram that is as close to that as possible, you try to find the same ram or ram from the same maker, speed, timings, voltage, only if that will not work you just look at the speed, timings and voltage.
Best thing to do is to sell the current ram and buy a kit of 2 sticks when wanting more ram.

Something to read again,

writtem by Tradesman1 who probably knows more about ram than anyone else here.Look at part 2 "Just Add More DRAM" why it can be so problematic.
