I have Lenovo thinkcentre (darlington-g rev 3.2 written on mbo)
( https://support.lenovo.com/hr/hr/documents/migr-65789 i think its this crap)
I belive it's LGA 775 socket with celeron 430 (according to bios), single core 1.8ghz, im thinking of buying better used cpu, they are fairly cheap.
Can my mbo support any 775 cpu or there are some limitations?
And which ones are the best 775 ddr2 intel processors out there? I'm not too familiar with those, which ones should i be after?

I got that thing for 15$ and i want to make it usefull as a ''guest pc''
Will buy MOAR ddr2 of ebay, fairly cheap, also got radeon 6870 laying around

In bios it says q9652/q963/g965, what does it mean in the end? I googled compatibility and g965 can even handle q6700, but what do i have really?

Googleing numbers written on mbo i also found this https://www.servercase.co.uk/shop/components/motherboards/intel/ibm-lenovo-thinkcentre-m55-desktop-motherboard-fru45c0083/

Those oem pc-s are real pain to google and find out what they are

Memory
400MHz DDR2 (Double Data Rate) dual channel memory support
PC2-4200 (533MHz) memory supported
PC2-5300 (667MHz) memory supported
Two 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM UDIMM sockets
Supports a maximum memory up to 4GB
If 4GB of physical memory is installed approximately 3GB will be useable by the operating system. This is due to limitations from the address mapping of PCI busses and other system devices.
ECC or parity memory is not supported

Well that is the list for that board and reading around nobody has had much luck with c2d or c2q cpu's in one, Probably due to microcode in the bios. The board will only take 1066 fsb cpu with 800mhz ram core 2 duo and c2qaud with 1333 fsb are more in the g31 chipset era

Oh originally i was looking at an A52 now its changed to M55

*Make sure before you pull the cpu for changeover, that you update the bios to the latest from lenovo on that model or the Core 2 Duo may not boot, the latest bios may support later cpu's better

I would say that as long as the c2d cpu does not exceed 1066mhz fsb and 2mb cache it could work, those compatible cpu lists are not always complete with later cpu's added

I belive i found my model
https://support.lenovo.com/hr/hr/documents/migr-65779
Chipsets
Intel Q965
Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3000
Q965 "G" Northbridge
ICH8 Southbridge
SMSC 5407 Super IO

What is that ''G''? In bios it says q965/q963/g965, and reading from here http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/G965_Express.html
i can see that g965 does support even quad Q6600, 2.4 GHz, FSB 1066 MHz, L2 8 MB.
And even on q965 i se comments on that page that user is using q6600 even if it says its not supported

Not all about chipset compatibility, bios code
I have like a collection of 50 c2d, c2q cpu's 775's . Bet you would love to say that right now :) You could just try them

Doesnt work. Guy near me was selling q6600 so i tested it, wont even boot. Updated to latest drivers, but yeah, it probably only supports MAX e6600 like it's stated on lenovo website. They gave up updating microcode long long time ago for this model. These machines sucks.

But i got a whole new idea 😛 Found good used 775mbo that will support xeon 😛 Which are dirt cheap and as good as q9650 / new amd fm2 quadcores /fx 6 core

Also a question.... should i get higher or lower tdp version of xeon? (E5450/X5450) They are all the same, only difference is massive tdp gap and small clock speed difference. Which is supposed to be better overclocker, handle more with less heat?
Something tells me i should go with E and achieve same oc speeds as x can but with less power? Are ''e'' just handpicked better chips that came out of factory?

Like i said, don't take everything you read around the internet
