So im switching motherboards from a 970a-g43 to a ga-78lmt and i know i'm going to have to re install windows but when i do that will it erase my existing hard drive and start fresh or do i have to do anything before i upgrade.

1) If you don't need the data, just plug into the new MB, reinstall the windows, and everything will be erased during the installation. Check the link step 8, when you click the "format" then everything will be gone. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html
2) If you need the data on that HDD, saving them to other HDD, then do the installation, because everything will be gone after you done the installation.
