Hi all!

So news that will blow you mind!:

The AMD fx 9590........
Is garbage! yayyyyyyyy

the thing overheats like a toaster and many are telling me the thing is bottlenecking my GTX 970 hard.

However with a pretty awesome motherboard im afraid switching to intel sadly isn't really an option for the moment but im keen to grab a new processor soon.

What do you guys reckon the best AMD processor out there is in terms of performance that doesn't overheat like a waffle iron and will compliment my GPU?

Thanks in advance!

Solution

Actually, it might be cheaper to switch to AMD Ryzen. If you buy any of Intel's new Skylake or Kaby Lake CPUs, then you will have to get new RAM. Both Skylake and Kaby Lake support DDR4.

I recommend waiting until AMD releases Ryzen (I believe it's Feb. 28). The CPUs are rumored to be significantly cheaper, so you actually might save a little money.
There isn't a CPU that will beat the 9590 for the same socket. Undervolt and underclock your 9590 if you're having thermal problems. It's not going to solve any bottleneck problem, but I'd be surprised if it is a severe bottleneck in too many games. If you do find that it is causing big problems your only option is to go with Intel or Ryzen.

Ryzen is the new CPU series that AMD is releasing at the beginning of March. If all the demos, leaks, etc. are true, then it will perform roughly on par with Intel and use about the same amount of power. Now, some leaks are saying that it will cost significantly less than comparable Intel CPUs. We will find out at the beginning of March if that's true or not.
Either way, it still means a platform switch. Ryzen will use the new AM4 socket.

You need a good watercooler for the 9590. Yes you can wait for Ryzen, but like most of us you probably don't have the money for a new mobo, cpu, and ram.

Get a watercooler. You can use the watercooler on Ryzen, or intel if you ever need to switch to a new PC (all you need is a bracket swap). Don't gimp yourself by downclocking if you have the engine, use the horsepower.

oh wow, will i really need a new motherboard? i have the sabertooth 990fx r 2.0 which i hoped would be able to run any new amd cpu given its price- will this just become redundant? and sorry but RAM as well? whats wrong with my Hyper-x 8GB's?

Blimey, well at this point it seems to make sense to just switch to a decent intel mo-board and cpu- rather than buy an expensive new mo board cpu AND ram. 🙁 dammit amd y u suck?

You are realistically going to spend the same amount on either platform (when it launches).
Intels two newest platforms (Z170 and Z270) both use DDR4 ram, and so does Ryzen.

So you will have to buy a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Well, you dont HAVE to, but its a logical move.

good point Gam3r, my goal was the great improvement with the least amount spent, but seems my hardware's falling behind.
Tbh though at this point i would be more tha happy with a GTX 1070 and a cpu that can run it, looks like a switch to intel maybe

There is one more option, haswell series, it is the forth generation from intel and it uses ddr3, so you need to change only mobo and cpu and keep your current ram. You need a z97 motherboard and a intel cpu from haswell series( i5 4570k,4590k or i7 4770k, 4790k), there is no real difference between latest intel and haswell, it is very marginal, in real tasks and gaming you won't notice it.

In my opinion though, the slight processor increase is offset by the the additional RAM performance as well as the plethora of motherboard features of syklake and kabylake (for minimal more investment).

As far as games are concerned, DDR4 offers at best a 1-2% increase in fps.
