What are ATAPI devices? Do I need them?

I am looking for a nice budget/quality motherboard for an LGA 1150 System with no over clocking. I want to go with an Asus Z87 Plus, however I am confused about ATAPI ports.

"These SATA ports are for data hard drivers only. ATAPI devices are not supported."
This is at the bottom of the specs page, any ideas?
Will this limit what I can do?

Older harddrives, cd players and such used an older 80-pin cable. New newer harddrives, cd players, etc use the sata cable instead.
