im gonna upgrade my crappy pc and i found out that the i5 8400 is compatible to my motherboard so decided to upgrade it and turn it to a vid editing pc im also gonna buy a cheap video card like the 950 or the 750 ti or the latest equivalent power level of the 750 ti

the pc is a basic custom pc with a i5 6400 in it

The 8400 is a 6-core processor, while the others are 4-core. However, even though all three will fit in LGA 1151, the 8400 will require a motherboard with an Intel 3xx-series chipset.

So, if your motherboard does not have a chipset such as a Z370, but a Z270 or Z170, the 8400 will not work.

Your current motherboard most definitely is not compatible with i5-8400. I5-6400 and i5-8400 require completely different motherboards (cpu socket has the same number of pins, but it's different and not compatible).

what kind of motherboard do i need? its so hassle to buy another motherboard though

so my current motherboard isn't really compatible to the i5 8400 even if the socket is the same with my i5 6400?

Yep. You can complain to Intel about that bad design decision.
