What are fan grills, and what are they really for?

So, while I was browsing newegg for some fans, I came across some apevia fans with grills. I got curious of what grills were, so I looked it up. They seem to be similar to dust filters, but I'm still not sure of what they're really for. Anybody know anything about them?

They are just for protective purposes. So that you dont put your fingers in the fan. No dust protection there..

to keep fingers and cables away from the fan blades.

That's really what all they're for? Well I guess they could be useful if you have a lot of wires in your case or you have a small case.
